12 tips for your employee development conversation (MUS)
An employee development conversation (MUS) is your opportunity to talk about your well-being, tasks, and professional development. With good preparation, you can use the conversation to strengthen your professional direction and create better conditions for your work in the Life Science industry.
An employee development conversation (called MUS in Denmark) is not about your results. It is about your well-being, your responsibilities, and your development in your role.
When you prepare thoroughly, the conversation becomes more valuable. You will find it easier to explain your motivation, your skills, and your wishes for the future. At the same time, you will be in a stronger position in the dialogue with your manager because you have thought through your points in advance.
Use the conversation to take ownership of your career
When you prepare well, the employee development conversation becomes more than a routine meeting. It becomes a tool that helps you develop in your role.
In an industry such as Life Science, where knowledge and development move quickly, ongoing dialogue about well-being and skills is particularly important.
Below you will find a guide on how to prepare for and get the most out of your MUS.
1. Reflect on your well-being
Well-being is an important part of the conversation. Consider what works well in your daily work and what could be improved. Also think about the balance between your work and private life. If you would like changes, bring concrete suggestions. This makes it easier for your manager to take them into account.
3. Be clear about your motivation
Think about what motivates you in your work. This might be professional immersion, collaboration, new projects, or responsibility. When you explain what drives you, it becomes easier for your manager to understand what gives you energy and engagement.
4. Review your tasks
Look at your tasks and consider which ones you enjoy the most. Are there tasks you would like to work more with, or tasks that mainly drain your energy? If you would like changes, suggest how tasks could be adjusted or distributed differently.
5. Talk openly about challenges
The employee development conversation is a safe space for dialogue. If something is difficult in your daily work, bring it up. This might relate to workload, collaboration, prioritisation, or expectations. When challenges are discussed openly, it becomes easier to find solutions together.
6. Focus on your development
Think about how you would like to develop professionally. Consider both your short-term and long-term goals. Development might involve new skills, more or less responsibility, or different types of tasks that strengthen your professional profile.
7. Think in terms of skills
Consider which professional skills would strengthen you in your role. This might include technical specialisation, project management, or cross-team collaboration. When you identify concrete skills, it becomes easier to plan your development.
8. Explore relevant courses
Look for inspiration in courses, conferences, or further education before your MUS. You are also welcome to contact our career advisers, who can help you find the right courses for you. When you bring concrete suggestions, you show commitment to your development. It also makes it easier for your manager to assess the possibilities.
What is MUS?
A MUS (short for Medarbejderudviklingssamtale in Danish) is a regular conversation between an employee and their manager, where the employee can openly discuss their needs, goals, and career direction with their manager.
The purpose is not to evaluate performance, but to focus on and support the employee’s well-being, motivation, tasks, and professional development.
9. Connect your goals to company objectives
Your development goals become stronger when they align with your company’s strategy or your department’s objectives. Consider how your development can also contribute to the success of your team or organisation. Win-win solutions are rarely rejected.
10. Consider your career path
The employee development conversation can also be an opportunity to discuss your future in the organisation. You might want new responsibilities or a different role in the future. If your organisation supports internal mobility, this is a good time to start the conversation.
11. Use the MUS template actively
Many organisations use a MUS template or development plan. See it as a tool to structure your reflections. Write your points clearly so both you and your manager share the same starting point for the conversation.
12. Follow up after the conversation
A good MUS does not end with the meeting itself. Use the agreements you made in your ongoing dialogue with your manager throughout the year. You can also revisit specific points in one-to-one meetings. Follow up on your development goals and adjust the plan if your tasks or priorities change.
