Vacation supplement and the sixth holiday week

Vacation supplement

In addition to vacation days, employees who are entitled to paid vacation are paid a vacation supplement corresponding to at least 1 percent of the vacation-eligible salary. With the new Holiday Act, this holiday supplement will be divided into two payments, so that holiday supplement for the period 1 September to 31 May will be paid with the salary for the month of May, and holiday supplement for the period 1 June to 31 August will be paid with the salary for August.

In some cases, a higher holiday supplement has been agreed, and you should therefore check your terms.

The sixth holiday week

The sixth holiday week doesn’t derive from the Holiday Act, and is therefore dependent on your specific agreement, either individual or collective (collective agreement).

In the private sector, your employer determine the framework for the sixth holiday week, as it is agreed in addition to your rights according to the Holiday Act. However, most employers usually follow one of two models:

  1. Each employee has five vacation days each calendar year. However, this scheme does not follow the holiday year and will therefore most often simply continue in unchanged form.
  2. You have five vacation days that follow the period and / or accrual according to the current Holiday Act. The days should follow the same principles for holding holidays that are earned under the Holiday Act.

In the public sector, the old rules around the sixth holiday week (special holidays) continue to apply. In practice, this means that public employees must be familiar with the old holiday rules on earning in a previous calendar year, and taking holiday between 1 May and 30 April. One must therefore keep an eye on two systems.
