No matter where it comes from, motivation plays a key role in how you experience your working life. When you are motivated, you perform better, feel more satisfied, and take greater ownership of your professional and personal development.

Why motivation matters – for you and your employer

When you are motivated, you are more productive. You are also more engaged, creative, and persistent. You become a stronger professional and a valuable colleague.

For employers, motivation is a key factor in performance and retention. Motivated employees deliver higher quality, stay longer, and contribute positively to collaboration and workplace culture.

Understand your personal drivers

Motivation is individual. What drives one person may not work for another. That is why it is important to understand your own motivational drivers.

There are two main types of motivation: intrinsic and extrinsic.

Intrinsic motivation

Intrinsic motivation comes from within. It is the satisfaction you feel when doing a task for its own sake. It helps you focus, take ownership, and stay engaged because the work feels meaningful.

Examples of intrinsic motivation:

  • Autonomy: You have influence and control over your work

  • Mastery: You develop your skills and grow professionally

  • Purpose: Your work contributes to something meaningful, such as patient safety, societal value, or professional quality

Extrinsic motivation

Extrinsic motivation comes from external rewards or recognition. This can include salary, bonuses, status, or feedback. It can be a strong driver, especially when it supports your internal values.

Examples of extrinsic motivation:

  • A salary increase recognising your performance

  • Opportunities for promotion or increased responsibility

  • Recognition from colleagues or managers

  • Feedback that highlights your strengths

Find the right balance

Neither type of motivation is better than the other – but balance is essential.

If you only focus on external rewards, motivation may drop if they disappear. However, if you rely only on internal motivation, it can be difficult to set boundaries or prioritise your own needs.

Balance also requires fairness. If you feel others are rewarded more than you for the same effort, it can affect your motivation – even if you enjoy your work.

Motivation changes over time

Motivation is not constant – and that is completely normal.

What motivated you earlier in your career may not motivate you today. Changes in tasks, colleagues, or life circumstances can shift your priorities.

That is why it is important to reflect regularly:

  • What gives you energy?

  • When do you feel most engaged?

  • Which tasks feel meaningful?

You do not need to feel passionate every day. But your work should feel meaningful overall.

Exercise: map your motivation

To understand your motivation, start by looking back at your working life.

When have you felt most motivated – and when have you lacked motivation?

Try this exercise:

  • Draw a timeline of your career

  • Mark periods of high motivation with a star

  • Mark periods of low energy or motivation with a minus

Then reflect on what characterised those periods:

  • What tasks did you work on?

  • Who was your manager?

  • What were your working conditions?

Many people begin to see patterns. You may thrive on deep professional focus, or on collaboration and feedback.

Use these insights to adjust your working life. Discuss them with your manager or use them as a starting point for your next career move.
