12 tips for your performance review

A performance and development review (MUS) is your opportunity to discuss wellbeing, tasks, and professional growth. With the right preparation, you can use the conversation to strengthen your career direction in the Life Science industry.

A performance and development review (MUS) is not a run-through of your results. It is a dialogue about your wellbeing, your tasks, and your development at work.

When you prepare thoroughly, the conversation becomes more valuable. You can clearly express your motivation, skills, and future goals. At the same time, you enter the discussion with your manager well prepared.

Take ownership of your career

When you prepare for your performance review, you take ownership of your career. The conversation becomes more than a routine — it becomes a tool for your professional development.

In the Life Science industry, where knowledge evolves quickly, ongoing dialogue about wellbeing and skills is essential.

Below, you will find a practical guide to help you prepare and get the most out of your review.

1. Prepare well in advance

Start your preparation early. Write down your reflections so you arrive ready.

2. Reflect on your wellbeing

Wellbeing is a key part of your review. Consider what works well and what can be improved.

Think about your work–life balance. If you want changes, bring concrete suggestions. This makes it easier for your manager to respond.

3. Define your motivation

Reflect on what motivates you. This could be professional depth, collaboration, new projects, or responsibility.

When you explain your drivers, your manager better understands what gives you energy and supports your engagement.

4. Review your tasks

Go through your tasks and assess which ones you thrive in.

Are there tasks you want more or less of? Suggest how responsibilities can be adjusted or redistributed.

5. Address challenges openly

Your review is a safe space for dialogue. If something is challenging, bring it up.

This could relate to workload, collaboration, priorities, or expectations. Open dialogue makes it easier to find solutions together.

6. Focus on your development

Consider how you want to develop professionally.

Think about both short-term and long-term goals. Development may involve new skills, different responsibilities, or new types of tasks.

7. Think in competencies

Identify which competencies will strengthen your profile.

This could include specialisation, project management, or cross-team collaboration. Clear competencies make development easier to plan.

8. Explore relevant courses

Research courses, conferences, or further training before your review.

You can also contact our career advisors for guidance. Concrete suggestions show commitment and make it easier to evaluate opportunities.

9. Align with company goals

Your development goals are stronger when they align with your company’s strategy.

Consider how your growth can support your team or organisation. Win–win solutions are rarely rejected.

10. Consider your career path

Your review is also a chance to discuss your future.

You may want new responsibilities or a different role. If internal mobility is possible, start the conversation here.

11. Use the review template actively

Many organisations use a review template or development plan.

Use it to structure your reflections. Write clearly so you and your manager share a common starting point.

12. Follow up after the review

A good review does not end with the meeting.

Use your agreements throughout the year. Follow up in one-to-one meetings and adjust your plan if priorities change.
