HOLIDAY
3 things you need to know about your summer holiday
Have you planned your summer holiday? Time is running out to get your holiday set. Casper Gad, Head of Legal, explains the rules you need to know.
When spring arrives, it is also a reminder that summer holiday is just around the corner.
Many have already agreed their holiday plans with their employer. But perhaps you still need to finalise yours?
“It is important to agree your summer holiday with your employer as soon as possible. If you cannot agree, your employer can dictate when you take your holiday,” says Casper Gad, Head of Legal at Pharmadanmark.
If your employer dictates your holiday, they must give you at least three months’ notice.
“These three months are a good guideline for planning. Make sure to submit your holiday requests as early as possible – and no later than three months before you want to take your leave,” he says.
Here are answers to three common questions about summer holidays.
1. How many weeks of summer holiday am I entitled to?
You are generally entitled to three consecutive weeks of summer holiday.
Summer holiday – also known as the main holiday period – must be taken between 1st of May and 30th of September.
You can split your holiday into shorter periods, but this must be agreed with your employer.
2. When should I request my summer holiday?
It is a good idea to request your holiday as early as possible.
If you and your employer cannot agree, your employer can decide when you take your holiday.
However, your employer must give you at least three months’ notice before your main holiday.
3. Can I take holiday if I have not earned enough days?
If you have not earned enough holiday days, you may be able to take holiday in advance.
You need to make a written agreement with your employer.
Your employer is not obliged to accept this, but in most cases, it is possible to reach an agreement.
If you have not earned enough days, your employer cannot require you to take three weeks of summer holiday if you do not want to.
