Guide: Move forward after dismissal
Have you been dismissed? Get a practical guide to handling your reaction, finding direction and taking the next step in your working life.
A dismissal can feel like a setback, but for many it also marks the beginning of something new. Here is a guide to help you manage the situation, find direction and take your next career step.
Common reactions to dismissal
Being dismissed often triggers strong emotions. This is normal. Work is closely linked to identity and self-worth, so a dismissal can feel like a personal and professional loss.
People react differently, but many experience four phases:
1. Shock phase
You may feel confused, upset or experience physical reactions such as restlessness, sleeplessness or discomfort.
2. Reaction phase
You begin to process what has happened. You may feel anger, sadness or unfairness. Your thoughts may feel overwhelming.
3. Processing phase
You start to accept the change. You begin to look ahead and consider your options.
4. Acceptance and development phase
You accept the situation and begin to see the dismissal as a new starting point. You regain control. Do not rush – but when you feel ready, it is time to act.
Use your notice period actively
A dismissal can feel like a setback, but it is also an opportunity to rethink your career. This may be the time to change direction, find better balance or pursue something meaningful.
