New graduate? Here's your checklist for life after graduation
It can feel overwhelming to keep track of everything you need to sort out after graduation. Here is an overview of the most important things to help you get off to a great start.
Congratulations on your degree!
Whether you have just submitted your thesis or already have your diploma in hand, a new chapter is about to begin.
The transition from student life to working life is exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming, with many practical things to keep track of.
That is why we have put together this checklist to help you start your new chapter with confidence.
Make sure your unemployment insurance is in place
Hopefully, you will land your first job quickly. However, if you are unemployed after graduation, it is important to make sure your unemployment insurance membership is in order so that you may be eligible for unemployment benefits.
Remember:
If you are not already a member of an unemployment insurance fund, you must join no later than 14 days after receiving your final grade.
If you are already a member, you must change your membership status from student to recent graduate within 14 days of receiving your final grade.
If you miss the 14-day deadline, you may lose your entitlement to unemployment benefits.
Please note that Pharmadanmark is a union – not an unemployment insurance fund. Our partner, Akademikernes A-kasse (AKA), can guide you through everything you need to know to qualify for unemployment benefits.
Ease into your job search
Once your final exams are over, remember to take some time off and celebrate your achievement.
After a well-deserved break, it is a good idea to gradually begin your job search.
Update your LinkedIn profile, make it clear that you have recently graduated and are looking for work, and reach out to people in your network who work in industries or companies that interest you.
Know your market value
Many recent graduates risk underselling themselves when salary discussions begin.
Before your first interview, it is a good idea to find out what people with a similar education and level of experience earn.
That way, you will be in a much stronger position when negotiating your salary.
Use our salary calculator to see the typical salary level for your education.

Have your contract reviewed before you sign
When you are offered your first job, it can be tempting to sign the contract straight away. However, before accepting the offer, we recommend having one of our legal advisers review your contract.
We will make sure your salary and employment terms are fair and help answer any questions before you sign.
That way, you can start your new job with confidence and focus on what really matters – getting your career off to a great start.

Not found a job yet? That is completely normal
Many recent graduates expect to find their first job quickly. Some do – for others, it takes a little longer.
Receiving a rejection does not mean you chose the wrong degree or that you are not attractive to employers. Job searching is a skill that takes time, experience, and patience.
“Job searching is something you have to learn”
When Emma Engelbreht submitted her thesis in 2025, she did not expect the next six months to be filled with uncertainty and rejections. The experience inspired her to share three pieces of advice she wishes she had received herself.
Remember to update your membership details
When you complete your degree, remember to update your status on My Page – it only takes a moment.
As a recent graduate, you receive a 50% discount on your Pharmadanmark membership for the first six months after graduation. If you become unemployed, you may also be eligible for an even lower membership fee.
