5 tips to get back into your studies after a break
The transition from holidays to lectures and deadlines can feel tough. Here are five tips to help you get back into your studies after a break.
1. Ease yourself back in
After a break, it can be difficult to get back into study mode. Remember that you do not need to go from zero to a hundred in the first week to be a good student.
Give yourself a calm and realistic start, and gradually return to your study routines.
For example, you might study with your study group or begin with shorter reading sessions.
The start of the semester is also a good time to organise old notes and refresh the syllabus from previous semesters. You will thank yourself later when a course builds on something you may have forgotten.
2. Get the practicalities in order
A new semester brings new courses and new requirements. Spend a little time before and at the beginning of the semester creating an overview.
Check your timetable, read course descriptions and get hold of the books you need.
Update your calendar with teaching hours, assignment deadlines and exam dates so you have a clear overview of your studies.
You may also want to arrive a little early on the first day, so you have time to find your new classroom.
3. Use the start of the semester as a reset
Even if you are not new to your programme, the start of the semester is a great opportunity to adjust and improve your study habits.
Ask yourself what worked well last semester, and what you would like to do differently?
You might want to try a new study technique, a different way of taking notes or find a new study spot that suits you better.
Use your experience and allow yourself to try something new.
4. Remember life outside your studies
When reading lists are long and your schedule is full, it is important to take breaks and have some time off.
Make a plan for when you study and when you take time off. Write it down. This helps you build a routine that can last throughout the semester.
A student job can also give you energy and professional variation. If you are considering a student job, our career advisers can help you with your CV, application and interview preparation.
5. Think one step ahead
Even though the semester has only just begun, it can be helpful to look a little further ahead in your study journey.
You may soon need to choose electives, apply for an internship or plan an exchange. Or perhaps you will be writing your bachelor’s or master’s thesis next semester.
The earlier you reflecting on these milestones, the less pressure you will feel later when deadlines approach.
Good luck with the new semester!
