Unemployment insurance: Free cover with AKA
Do you want to be entitled to unemployment benefits from day one after graduation? Join Akademikernes A-kasse (AKA) like many of our other members – it is free throughout your studies.
If you want to be entitled to unemployment benefits from day one after completing your studies, you must join an unemployment insurance fund.
Pharmadanmark is a union, we are not an unemployment insurance fund. We provide legal advice, career guidance and support throughout your working life, while the unemployment insurance fund provides financial security through unemployment benefits.
We recommend joining Akademikernes A-kasse (AKA), Denmark’s largest unemployment insurance fund for academics.
AKA is free throughout your studies and remains one of the most affordable unemployment insurance funds after graduation.
By joining, you secure financial peace of mind when you complete your education and that you are well prepared to start your working life.
Why join while you are studying?
Unemployment benefits, insurance funds and job searching may not be top of mind while you are studying.
But there are three good reasons to join now:
You can be a free student member of AKA for up to five years
By law, you must have been a member of an unemployment insurance fund for at least twelve months before you can receive unemployment benefits, so the earlier you join, the better
If you join less than twelve months before graduation, you must complete a one-month waiting period before you can receive benefits
Are you close to graduating?
It is important that you join an unemployment insurance fund no later than fourteen days after receiving your final grade.
If you miss the deadline and do not have a job after completing your studies – you will only be entitled to unemployment benefits after at least one year of membership and once you meet the income requirement.
Unemployment insurance or union – what is the difference?
Unemployment insurance funds and unions are not the same but they complement each other.
Unemployment insurance fund (AKA): Pays unemployment benefits and supports you with job searching, early retirement and training
Union (Pharmadanmark): Negotiates your salary and employment terms, advises on contracts and working life, provides legal support and career guidance
To be fully covered, you should be a member of both Pharmadanmark and an unemployment insurance fund.
