5 students, 5 career dreams: “I hope to become a researcher in nanoscience”

A new group of curious, ambitious and very different young people have just started their studies. We met five students at Aarhus University. Erik, Emilie, Samuel, Katja and Maja gave us a glimpse into their student lives and shared their hopes for the future when their studies eventually turn into careers.

Erik

23 years old, 6th semester, Medicine

What do you find most interesting about your degree?

“Right now, I find anaesthesiology really interesting, but I am still very open to exploring different areas.”

What are you looking forward to when you graduate?

“I think it is about getting out there and doing something that actually matters to society. If I am completely honest, so far we have ‘just’ been studying, and I have not really felt that I have contributed very much. So I am looking forward to getting out there and actually making a difference.”

Erik

Emilie

25 years old, 9th semester, Chemistry

Why did you choose to study chemistry?

“I have always been very interested in chemistry and chemical reactions. When I started learning chemistry at school, I knew quite quickly that it was something I wanted to pursue. I just found it incredibly interesting, which is why I chose to study it.”

What direction or career path would you like to pursue?

“I would really like to work in the pharmaceutical industry. Something along those lines, perhaps at Lundbeck or Novo Nordisk. But ideally, I would like to stay in Jutland rather than move to Zealand.”

Emilie

Samuel

20 years old, 1st semester, Nanoscience

Why did you choose nanoscience in particular?

“One of the things that attracted me, besides it being a natural sciences degree, is how interdisciplinary it is. It combines mathematics, biology, chemistry and physics. I felt that if I chose one of the other degree programmes, I would miss out on either biology or physics. Nanoscience has a bit of everything, and I think that is really cool.”

Do you have any ideas about the direction or career path you would like to pursue?

“I could see myself doing research when I graduate, either here at Aarhus University or at another university. Or perhaps in a company. But I think and hope that I will end up as a researcher in nanoscience.”

Samuel

Katja

26 years old, 7th semester, Health Technology

You are working on your bachelor’s project. How does it feel?

“We have only just started. We are only a week into it, so you do not really know what you are getting yourself into. And you have heard that writing a bachelor’s project is a big process, so I think that is what is on my mind at the moment.”

What do you hope your future will bring?

“I have not really thought that far ahead yet, but somewhere like Novo Nordisk is definitely on my radar for the future. And the idea of helping people, that is what really appeals to me.”

Katja

Maja

24 years old, 5th semester, Medicinal Chemistry

Why did you choose medicinal chemistry in particular?

“I really enjoy working in the laboratory, and afterwards I would like to work with developing medicines or enzymes.”

What are you most looking forward to about starting your career?

“I am most looking forward to finding a job that I find interesting. And I am also really excited about getting out there and working in the pharmaceutical industry, at companies such as Lundbeck or Novo Nordisk. I hope to do something along those lines.”
