Holiday and leave

Illness during holiday

If you fall ill before or during your holiday, special rules apply. Here you get a clear overview of holiday barriers, sick leave, and replacement holidays.

Illness can affect your holiday plans. It is therefore important to understand the rules before your holiday begins.

This applies both if you fall ill before your holiday starts and if you become ill while you are on holiday.

When are you prevented from taking holiday

A holiday barrier is a situation where you are unable to take your holiday. This may include illness, parental leave, or compulsory military service.

If you have a holiday barrier, you can generally postpone your holiday.

If you are ill before your holiday

If you are ill before your holiday begins, you are generally not able to start your holiday.

You must report fit for work before your holiday begins. This means you do not use your holiday days, and you should inform your employer as soon as possible.

If you fall ill during your holiday

If you become ill during your holiday, you must notify your employer immediately.

You cover the first five days of illness yourself. After this, you may be entitled to replacement holiday. However, you will often need to pay for documentation, such as a medical certificate.
