Holiday and leave

Plan your holiday

Do you want to plan your holiday in good time? Get a clear overview of main holiday, notice periods, and holiday in advance so you can agree your leave with confidence.

How to plan your holiday

Planning your holiday is easier when you start early. Share your preferred dates with your employer as soon as possible.

If you cannot agree, your employer can decide when you take your holiday. However, this requires that the rules on notice are followed.

Holiday rules you should know

When can you take your main holiday?

You are generally entitled to three consecutive weeks of summer holiday (main holiday).

This must be taken between 1 May and 30 September. If you want to split your holiday, you need to agree to this with your employer.

When must the holiday be announced?

It is a good idea to request holiday as early as possible. If you and your employer cannot agree, your employer may decide when you take your holiday.

However, your employer must give notice:

  • At least three months before your main holiday (summer holiday)

  • At least one month before other holiday periods

Can you take a holiday in advance?

You can take a holiday before you have earned it if you agree this with your employer. This is called a holiday in advance.

The agreement should be in writing, so both parties are clear on the terms.

What if you do not have enough holiday days?

If you have not earned enough holidays, you may be able to take holidays in advance. This requires an agreement with your employer.

The agreement should be in writing to avoid any uncertainty later.
