Notice period
Your notice period is stated in your contract or collective agreement. If you are a salaried employee, it depends on your length of service.
Notice periods under the Danish Salaried Employees Act:
Senority | Notice period |
Up to 5 months | 1 month |
6 months – 2 years and 9 months | 3 months |
2 years and 9 months – 5 years and 8 months | 4 months |
5 years and 8 months – 8 years and 7 months | 5 months |
More than 8 years and 7 months | 6 months |
Note: During the first three months, your employer may terminate your employment with 14 days’ notice if a probation period is agreed.
Do you have to work during your notice period?
Your employer decides how your notice period is handled. You may be:
Released from duties – you do not have to work
Suspended – you must remain available but do not necessarily attend the workplace
Working as usual – you continue in your role during the period
Summary dismissal
Summary dismissal is the most severe form of termination and only applies in cases of serious misconduct, such as:
Gross disloyal behaviour
Theft
Violence
Unjustified absence

You are entitled to a reason
You can request a written explanation for your dismissal. We can assess whether the dismissal is fair and whether you may be entitled to compensation.
If you believe the grounds for your dismissal are incorrect, you may be entitled to compensation for unfair dismissal. Pharmadanmark’s legal advisers can help assess whether your dismissal was carried out in accordance with the applicable rules.
Discrimination
Your employer must not dismiss you based on pregnancy, parental leave, gender, disability, ethnicity, political views, religion, sexuality or age. If the dismissal is based on one or more of these circumstances, certain special requirements may apply to the employer.
This does not mean you cannot be dismissed, but the dismissal must be justified and lawful. If not, you may be entitled to compensation – and if they are, we will also take on the dispute with the employer.
Severance pay
You may be entitled to severance pay if you have been employed for many years with the same employer.
Typically:
More than 12 years: 1 month’s salary
More than 17 years: 3 months’ salary
Unemployment benefits
If you are dismissed, contact your unemployment insurance fund as soon as possible. They help you understand the rules and access financial support.
If you have private income protection insurance, contact your provider.
Severance agreements
Some dismissals are concluded with a severance agreement. This sets out the terms of your departure, such as release from duties, compensation and holiday pay.
We always recommend having the agreement reviewed before signing.
Pharmadanmark unemployment scheme (PDA)
As a member, you are covered by Pharmadanmark’s unemployment scheme (PDA). If you become unemployed and meet the criteria, you may receive financial support on top of your benefits.
