Holidays and days off

Are your vacation days in order?

The year is coming to an end – and that means the deadline for taking your earned holiday is getting closer. Here’s what to keep in mind so you don’t lose your vacation days.

The calendar (and the dark evenings) reveal that 2025 is nearly over. This also means the deadline for taking the holiday you earned from 1st of September 2024 to 31st of August 2025 is approaching.

You must take all that holiday before 31st of December. As a rule, any unused vacation days after that date are lost.

You may be able to carry over a few days into the new holiday year – but only if you make a specific agreement with your employer. Make sure to arrange this soon to avoid losing those days.

If you have special vacation days or extra days off, it’s a good idea to check which period they apply to. These days are not covered by the Danish Holiday Act, and if they follow the same period as your regular holiday, you risk losing them unless you use them in time. You cannot transfer special vacation days or extra days off to the next holiday year.

If you have children, remember to check your care days (omsorgsdage). They usually follow the calendar year, meaning they may expire at the end of the year without compensation or transfer.

Now is a good time to do a quick check-up on your days off – including vacation days, extra days off, and care days.

If you’re on parental leave or long-term sick leave, you’re generally unable to take vacation and are therefore covered by special rules.
