1. Can you go home right away?

Ask your manager whether you’re expected to finish the workday or if you can go home after receiving your termination notice.

Most managers allow you to leave for the rest of the day to process the situation. But make sure you agree on this – don’t just leave without permission.

2. Are you released from duty (garden leave)?

If you’re on garden leave, it will be clearly stated in your termination letter. Sometimes it comes with conditions, such as:

  • “You are released once your tasks are handed over”
  • “You are released as soon as possible and no later than (date)”

Being released means you no longer have to show up at work from that date and throughout your notice period. The company may ask you to hand in your access card, keys, laptop, and phone immediately.

You’ll continue to receive your full salary, but you cannot work for a competitor during your notice period.

3. Should you sign the termination letter?

You may sign as confirmation that you’ve received the letter. But if the document looks like a severance agreement or anything beyond a simple receipt, contact us for legal advice before you sign.

4. Did you receive a severance agreement?

It’s common to receive a severance agreement along with your termination. This outlines the full terms of your termination. Our clear advice: Don’t sign before seeking our guidance.

Normally, you get 3–4 days to review and sign. If you’re given less than 72 hours, ask for an extension. It’s unreasonable not to allow time for professional advice on something this important.

5. Do you need psychological support?

A layoff can be emotionally overwhelming. If that’s the case, consider contacting your doctor or a psychologist. Many employers provide crisis support for employees in large-scale layoffs.
