Refresh your routines and set yourself up for a great semester

Study smarter: semester tips for returning students

Summer break is coming to an end, and a new academic year is about to begin. Summer days filled with cold beers, beach trips, and festival vibes are being replaced by coffee, lectures, and deadlines. If the transition feels a little heavy, you’re not alone. Here are five tips to help you smoothly get back into study mode.

1. Get back to your good habits

A long summer break is great, but it also makes the return to study mode a bit tougher. Start gently, but with some structure. You don’t need to go from zero to a hundred in the first week -good habits take time to rebuild. Instead, set a realistic plan with clear times for studying and for breaks. That way, you’ll build a steady routine that can carry you through the semester.

2. Get organized early

Each semester comes with new courses and fresh requirements. Set yourself up for success by getting the basics in order: review your schedule, go through the course descriptions, secure the necessary books, and update your calendar with key dates and commitments. The start of the semester is the perfect time to review old notes and refresh past material – you’ll thank yourself when those basics come up again in your new courses.

3. Use the start of the semester as a reset button

Even if you’re not new to university, the start of a new semester is a perfect chance to adjust and improve your study habits. What worked well last semester? What could you do differently? Maybe you want to try a new reading technique, a different way of taking notes, or find a study group that fits your rhythm. Use your past experiences – and allow yourself to try new things.

4. Remember life outside of studying

A good student life isn’t about mastering every single page of the syllabus. It’s about finding balance between studies, work, and free time. When the books feel heavy and your schedule is packed, it’s important to make room for breaks, movement, and social activities. Take time for yourself, see your friends, stay active – and consider whether a student job could give you some variety and extra energy. Pharmadanmark’s career guidance service can even help you find the right student job – from application to interview.

5. Think one step ahead

Even though the semester has just begun, it’s a good idea to look a little further ahead in your studies. Maybe you’ll soon need to choose electives, apply for an internship, or plan an exchange stay? Perhaps you’re already starting to think about your bachelor’s project or master’s thesis? The earlier you ask yourself these questions, the less pressure you’ll feel later when applications and deadlines are getting closer.

Good luck with the new semester – and remember, you’re not alone!
