What a day!
The World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences officially opened on Sunday, bringing together 3,379 participants from 101 countries in Copenhagen.
On Monday, Denmark’s Minister of the Interior and Health, Sophie Løhde, opened the first scientific day of the FIP Congress.
Pharmadanmark helped put antimicrobial resistance (AMR) at the center of attention, as the theme ran throughout the entire Monday program.
In her opening speech, the minister stressed that strong international collaboration is essential to tackling AMR, since no country can solve the challenge alone.
“Your role as pharmacists and Life Science professionals is crucial. We need your expertise,” said Sophie Løhde.
Pharmadanmark’s President, Stine Hasling Mogensen, was thrilled with the day’s outcome:
“I am incredibly proud that Pharmadanmark and the Danish AMR Alliance contributed so actively to the planning, and above all, that we helped bring pharmacists from all over the world together around such an important issue as AMR,” she said, adding:
“AMR is a cross-border threat to our healthcare systems. Collaboration across countries – and learning from best practices – is essential. Denmark plays an important role here, as we are among the countries with the best data on resistance patterns and development. At the same time, we are advanced in stewardship, meaning the optimal use of antibiotics, and we have a strong Life Science sector.”
The Danish footprint on the day was strong – with both ministerial presence and several Danish speakers.
Karen Astvad from Statens Serum Institut presented data from Denmark’s surveillance program showing that resistant fungal infections are on the rise. This challenge has so far received little attention, but the data now demonstrates that it must be taken seriously if we are to stop the trend. A strong example of the value of high-quality surveillance data as inspiration for other countries.
Groundbreaking Danish research also took the spotlight when SNIPR Biome’s CEO, Christian Grøndahl, presented how the innovative company uses CRISPR technology to develop new antimicrobial medicines. Read more in an article about SNIPR Biome from Pharma
New AMR Declaration
After an engaging panel debate, the day concluded with 80 participating organizations signing a declaration to strengthen efforts against AMR.
Pharmadanmark President Stine Hasling Mogensen signed on behalf of Pharmadanmark.
“This is a major step forward, as FIP’s member organizations are now committing to concrete action to reduce the spread of resistance. It also highlights a strong Danish footprint, which I look forward to following in the coming years,” she said.
